Chicago Theatre Review
My Fair Lady
My Fair Lady – Broadway in Chicago
If you like the classics, this is definitely a classic. Traditional and standard to what you might have seen if you saw the Loewe and Lerner version when it debuted 1956. It is family friendly, good for the young and the old. For me, being in the middle of those two demographics made it slightly harder to appreciate, but it did bring back memories of the matinees my Bubbie would get me dressed up for when I was a little kid.
The show centers around Eliza Doolittle, a low-class Cockney girl selling flowers on the streets of London. Professor Higgins, a world-famous linguist, passes her on the street and is determined to turn her into a high-class gal. With doubt, trials, tribulations, you will have to see how Eliza and Professor Higgins’ partnership progresses, and if she reaches her six month goal of being princess-ready for the Embassy Ball.
The humor is light, the show is a little eccentric. It would be a nice matinee to attend after going out for lunch with a group of friends. Just be sure to get coffee at that brunch, as runtime is around three hours, with one intermission.
The play was a classic, the actors did fantastic in terms of the performance, the pastel set-design (by Michael Yeargan) gave a feathery and fun vibe to the venue; but, personally the plot of the show was nothing that was boring nor had me on the edge of my seat.
My one true complaint would be regarding the theater. One, there was a lack of bathrooms, so be prepared before you arrive. There was also no warning when it came to intermission ending, which led to a lack of time to get situated as the play started. It left those in the audience standing and shuffling around as actors performed on stage.
Overall, I think this play is a classic, it’s a well-done version of a traditional musical. If you are looking for an activity for you and your girlfriends, My Fair Lady would be the play to see.
