Songs You’ve Heard and Hummed at Some Time
Lerner and Loewe’s Greatest Hits – Music Theater Works
The Music Theater Works Presents Lerner and Loewe’s Greatest Hits at the Nichols Concert Hall 1490 Chicago Avenue in Evanston. Great is a pretty bold statement. “Great” is the way we feel about the performance. We enjoyed all facets of this production.
The lighting was crisp and well coordinated with every song. As each song ended, a new color and intensity was introduced, The pleasingly pleasant acoustics and the excellent sight lines helped to contribute to a most enjoyable performance.
The music was neither too overpowering nor too diminished. It was in the middle; just right and paired well with the singers. Speaking of the singers, they were all excellent. They bellowed brilliantly with voices merging nicely. They were lively and at times campy at just the right moments.
They performed songs from five of Lerner and Loewe’s best works. included: “I’m On My Way” and “They Call the Wind Maria”, from Paint Your Wagon. We also enjoyed “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” and “Get Me to the Church on Time”, two lively and campy numbers from My Fair Lady.
There was one minor flaw in the show. We would like to be able to see the piano being played. It was positioned in a way that prevented viewing the pianist. That minor glitch aside, we give this production a definite rating of…
Highly Recommended
