Bristol Renaissance Faire
Just over the border of Illinois you enter Bristol, Wisconsin and are transported into a Renaissance theme park, complete with queens, knights, jousting and so much more. Voted the #1 Renaissance Faire in the country for the last 8 years it is easy to see why.
I’d like to share my own personal experiences. I started coming to the Faire about 35 years ago when it was King Richards Faire with my family and then continued the tradition every year. You can imagine over the course of that time many things changed in my life. New friends, old friends, people coming, people going. But one thing that has stayed the same is this piece of joy that everyone has felt who has experienced it. That said when you arrive check your troubles at the door.
It was a cooler then usual day and although it had rained early the ground was dried up , the sun came out and we began our day of fun and eating. Food choices are plentiful, there is something for everyone. From giant turkey legs, to fish and chips and much more you will never be hungry. But be sure to pace yourself. And stop at one of the booths for sassafras, and if you order root beer they will correct you.
Some of the other things to check out are the shops, a petting zoo, rock climbing, archery, fairies dancing through the park, face painting and crafts for the kids. And don’t miss the Queens parade. A staple at the faire is Mr. Moonie. Be sure to catch his act, great fun for kids and adults.
One of the highlights is tomato justice. For a few dollars you can throw tomatoes at the guy in the booth in what appears to be a stockade. But beware he is full of insults and no on is safe, even if you hit him head on.
The Falconer show is also a highlight. Set in the jousting area we were treated to a falcon flying around and learning how this amazing bird of prey survives.
There really is something for everyone and you are guaranteed to leave with a smile on your face and a full stomach. I have never stayed till the very end but this time we did. And what a treat. Singing and dancing, streamers and a perfect ending to a perfect day.
The festival runs through Labor Day, every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 7pm, rain or shine. The grounds are handicapped accessible.
